Clubs play roughly once a week, the fixture list is published months ahead, and the season stretches from August to May — which is exactly the weekly rhythm that pick’em, confidence and survivor formats were built around.
Why soccer suits a pool better than most people expect
The thing that makes football pools work is not football — it is the once-a-week cadence. One round of fixtures, one set of picks, one weekly winner, one conversation on Monday. European soccer has exactly that shape, and it keeps it for ten months instead of four.
It also has something the American sports do not: a fixture list known far in advance and a genuinely competitive middle. In a league where the table is decided over thirty-eight matches, the mid-table games are where pools are actually won, which rewards the people paying attention rather than the people who recognise the badges.
Formats that fit the soccer calendar
Pick’em across a weekend’s fixtures — the easiest way to bring in colleagues who follow one club and not much else.
Confidence works unusually well here, because a round of fixtures is a fixed, knowable list to rank from most to least certain.
Survivor is the standout. Across a thirty-eight-match season the no-repeat rule genuinely bites — the safe clubs run out long before the season does.
Run two at once. A league pool and a separate Champions League pool give the same group two different games without splitting anyone’s attention.
One group, two calendars
The five big European leagues — Premier League, La Liga, Bundesliga, Serie A and Ligue 1 — all run August to May and are decided on the league table rather than by a playoff. The Champions League sits alongside them with a league phase from September to January and knockout rounds from February into late spring, which makes it a natural second pool for the back half of the season.
MLS runs on the opposite calendar entirely: late February to mid-October, with playoffs into December. That is worth knowing, because an MLS pool covers precisely the summer months when every other pool your group runs has stopped.

It is free for up to 4 players, then roughly $3 per additional player over the free four, $2 per player (30–99) and $1 (100+), billed annually.
